Considering Abortion?

Mend is a free, local resource to women in Tulsa who want to learn more about abortion.

There are four main types of abortions

For each of these, it is important to know the procedure, when that type of abortion is a viable option, and the potential risks.

Medical Abortion
(Abortion Pill)

The most commonly used abortion pill protocol uses two drugs: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. This procedure is only FDA approved for use in women up to 10 weeks pregnant. Contact us to learn more about how these drugs work and their effects.

Surgical Abortion Vacuum Aspiration

These can be performed up to 14 weeks and are conducted by inserting a tube into the uterus. This tube is attached to a vacuum device that suctions out the embryonic baby.

Surgical Abortion (D&E)
Dilation and Evacuation

These can be performed through 20 weeks. This procedure varies because of the prep work needed the further along you are. You cervix may need to be opened before starting to be able to view the uterus. In addition to using a vacuum suction, forceps will be used in addition to other medical tools remove fetal parts.

Surgical Abortion (D&X)
Dilation and Extractions

These can be performed in pregnancies 21 weeks or greater by a specialized provider. Lethal injection to the fetus may be necessary and often surgical instruments such as forceps may be used to pull out fetal parts. Medication to soften the cervix will need to be taken 2 - 3 days prior to procedures and depending on the gestational age, labor induction may be required to birth the deceased baby.

What do I need to know about abortion?

Step one mend medical
There are various types of abortions depending on how far along the pregnancy has developed. Mend provides information on the various abortion procedures.
Step two mend medical
An ultrasound is needed to determine how far along the pregnancy is and if a natural miscarriage is occurring. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can also rule out an ectopic pregnancy which is rare but requires immediate medical attention.
Step three mend medical
Before having an abortion, it is important to be treated if there is an active STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection.) We can test for the two most common bacterial infections: gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Oklahoma prohibits abortion with exceptions to save the life of a woman. If you are looking at out of state options, it can be helpful to make an appointment with Mend first. What if I already had an abortion?

Whatever you choose regarding your pregnancy, Mend remains dedicated to caring for women emotionally, mentally, and physically. Studies show that abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental distress compared to women without a history of abortion. Sometimes these effects are not felt until years after termination. Because of this, we want to offer women a safe place to recover from the effects of abortion.
